AC Milan midfielder Kaka has beaten Cristiano Ronaldo to the prestigious title of Ballon d'Or, the Golden Ball, and will be confirmed as the world's top player next weekend.

The news will come as a boost to the Italian game, which resumed last night, a fortnight after the fatal shooting of Lazio fan Gabriele Sandri kick-started a wave of violence across the country.

The Brazilian, who inspired Milan to victory in the Champions League last season, said: "The recent period has been the best in my career but I am still improving."
