LONDON (AP) - Three of England's top players and keys to the country's World Cup hopes - Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen and John Terry - picked up worrying injuries in games Saturday.
Manchester United striker Rooney was carried from the field with a foot injury.
The 20-year-old grimaced in pain and clutched his right foot after a challenge by defender Paulo Ferreira 10 minutes from the end of United's 3-0 defeat at Chelsea.
"Hopefully, Wayne's injury is not a bad one,'' United manager Alex Ferguson said. "We don't want to make any opinions at this stage. But he's in the right hands with the doctors. We will have to wait and see.''
Rooney is expected to be England's strongest player at the World Cup, which starts in Germany on June 9. If he is out injured, his absence could hamper the team's chances of winning the title for the first time in 40 years.
Owen played the last 30 minutes of Newcastle's 0-0 draw with Birmingham City. He was limping near the end. It was his first game since breaking his right foot on New Year's eve.
Team officials said he would see a specialist on Monday.
"When he (Owen) came in he said he was a little bit concerned - he wasn't quite 100 percent happy with it,'' Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder said. "But no sharp pain.''
"The thought of Rooney and Owen not playing for England is not worth thinking about,'' Roeder added.
Terry picked up a gash on his leg in a challenge from Rooney and required about a dozen stitches. Terry is England's top defender and Chelsea's captain. |
