27-yr-old Filipino man found dead in Whampoa flat
By Nur Dianah Suhaimi

TWENTY minutes of shouting and furniture being thrown about was followed by a sudden dead silence at a Whampoa neighbourhood on Saturday morning.

The ambulance arrived and paramedics found a Filipino man in a 16th storey flat of Block 16 Jalan Tenteram.

The 27-year-old was found sitting on the floor, his upper torso slumped on the bed beside where he sat.

It was a dead-on-arrival case as the man had no pulse and was not breathing.

The police were next on the scene and declared the case a murder - the second of the year.

There was no blood around the body and police would not say what kind of injuries the man sustained, save that they were to his upper body. It is understood he had bruises on his neck.

Police also did not find any murder weapon in the flat, nor have they arrested anyone at press time.

The man, Filojfido Bernard Montemayor, who was unemployed, was topless and wore only a pair of shorts. He is believed to be here on a social visit pass.

Neighbours said he lived there with another man and two women, all Filipinos in their 20s.

The two women are said to be nurses at the Tan Tock Seng Hospital but it is not known what the other male tenant does.

The four had moved in about three months ago, renting the five-room flat from a Singaporean couple.

National Lifelong Income Scheme to take effect in 2013
By Dominique Loh, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 03 February 2008 1746 hrs

SINGAPORE: The National Lifelong Income Scheme will take effect in 2013, once approved by the government, said Manpower Minister Ng Eng Hen.

This will allow Singaporeans to draw out monthly income from their CPF accounts from age 65 "for as long as they live".

Statistically, Singaporeans are living longer. It is estimated that by the year 2030, 900,000 Singaporeans will be above 65 years old.

So a major concern for the government is to make sure that Singaporeans are able to manage the costs of living longer.

After touring the Keat Hong division on Sunday, Dr Ng said in a dialogue session with residents that the Lifelong Income Scheme, announced by Professor Lim Pin's committee recently, addresses such concerns.

He said: "It's workable. We've looked further at our sums, and under the old system, if you have half your minimum sum in cash, about S$67,000 under the old system, you get about S$600 (a month) from age 65 to 85, that's it. If we adopt the Lifelong Income Scheme, you will get more or less the same amount

LAGI KES KENA SERANG

KEPALA DITETAK, JARI TANGAN TERBELAH DUA

Pemuda hampir maut diserang di lobi lif di bawah flat

Oleh
Khalid Khamis

Beliau berbuat demikian sehinggalah pegawai paramedik ambulans tiba.

HASRAT KETEMU ADIK TERPISAH

$1.5m worth of drugs seized in largest bust in five years

By Lee Khai Yan, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 05 February 2008 2005 hrs

SINGAPORE: The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) has smashed another major drug syndicate.

Drugs valued at about S$1.5 million were also recovered in the operation on Monday. The seizure is billed as the largest in five years.

Drugs seized included about 10kg of heroin, 45g of 'Ice', 68 'Erimin-5' tablets and four Subutex tablets.

CNB officers also seized S$400,000 in cash and arrested a 38-year-old syndicate leader and seven others.

The arrest was a result of a tip-off to the CNB. Officers were told that the syndicate leader would be receiving a fresh consignment on Monday morning.

So they followed him to a car park at Whampoa Drive. There, the leader met a couple who emerged from a Singapore-registered car. Investigations showed that the car belonged to the syndicate leader.

The syndicate leader then took over the car and drove it to another car park at Park Crescent, which turns out to be just next to his hideout at New Market Road.

After parking the car, he went into a shop and returned with a big plastic bag. He then retrieved a spare tyre from the car boot and placed it in the plastic bag. That was when he was arrested.

CNB officers found bags of heroin and 'Ice' from the tyre. They then raided the various hideouts of the leader's associates.

CNB said the series of drug seizures this year showed that overseas syndicates were trying to flood the Singapore market to generate demand and find buyers. - CNA/ir

Hawkers at wet markets say business has dropped by 20%
By Lian Cheong and Julia Ng, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 05 February 2008 2033 hrs

A wet market in Singapore

SINGAPORE: Some hawkers at wet markets are complaining that business has dropped by some 20 percent as customers are staying away due to rising food prices.

In the past years, many Singaporeans would have completed their shopping at the wet market to prepare for the Lunar New Year reunion dinner the following night.

Stallholders at the Chinatown wet market said shoppers are more cautious this year. Fewer are buying seafood like prawns and pomfrets even though the prices have not changed much from last year.

There is also ample supply of live poultry from Malaysia, which has kept prices affordable. The price of pork, though, has been going up.

Some stallholders said they are absorbing the costs so that they can sell more.

Fruits and vegetables have seen the biggest price fluctuations. In some cases, prices have shot up by as much as 50 percent.

Citrus fruit tangor cost S$8 per kilogramme on Monday, but overnight, the price rose to S$12.

Stallholders said rainy weather in Malaysia has affected the harvest of most vegetables, and some now cost 30 percent more.

Senior ICA officer faces 27 immigration offences
By Hoe Yeen Nie, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 05 February 2008 2147 hrs

SINGAPORE: A senior officer with the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has been hauled to court for abetting two Chinese nationals.

Thong Sing Hock is currently a deputy superintendent at the ICA. But the court heard that when he was a senior assistant commander (ground operations) in Tuas, between 2003 and 2006, Thong had helped two Chinese women make false declarations on their disembarkation cards.

The two are Song Qinghua and Mu Qian. Thong allegedly harboured Song, helped her produce a false passport, and apparently even used the ICA's computer system to check her records.

Separately, the accused is said to have failed to produce his passport to a duty immigration officer at Changi Airport. In all, Thong faces 27 charges for his abuse of authority.

His case will be heard again on 12 February.

S'pore to have first Olympic-sized ice skating rink
By Joyce Teo

Work will start at the end of this year and the Olympic-sized ice-skating rink, together with the revamped mall, is expected to open at the end of next year. -- PHOTO: CAPITALAND

CAPITAMALL Trust (CMT) is building Singapore's first Olympic-sized ice skating rink as part of a $138.2 million overhaul of its Jurong Entertainment Centre.

The announcement on Tuesday comes two days after the Singapore Ice Skating Association (Sisa) complained that rinks in Singapore are not big enough for competition purposes.

Without an Olympic-sized rink, which measures 30m by 60m, Singapore cannot be a member of the International Skating Union (ISU) and compete in ISU-sanctioned events, such as the Olympics.

CMT said in a statement on Tuesday that it will replace the current 20m by 40m rink, which is operated by Fuji Ice Palace, on level 3 of the entertainment centre with the Olympic-sized rink. The new rink will be flanked by food and beverage operators and restaurants on both sides.

'We are very very pleased. It will allow us to apply for an ISU membership,' said Sisa president Ms Sonja Chong. 'It will mean that the Singapore flag can fly at ISU events such as the Asian Winter Games.'

Work will start at the end of this year and the Olympic-sized ice-skating rink, together with the revamped mall, is expected to open at the end of next year.

SINDIKET MELAYU LEBUR

Rampasan heroin bernilai $1.5j terbesar sejak lima tahun lalu
Oleh
Khairul Bahriah Mahfud

Temanita ketua sindiket, seorang penagih berusia 20 tahun, ditangkap di New Market Road.

MASAGOS: PENGAKUAN SEKOLAH SILAP WAJAR

'Kantin halal' berniat baik tapi kecilkan ruang bersama

Oleh
Farid Hamzah

AMAH DIBERKAS LEPAS DISYAKI DERA BAYI MAJIKAN

Mereka terkejut apabila melihat amah mereka sendiri melakukan perbuatan sedemikan.

AN Indonesian maid has been arrested by Singapore police for abusing her employers' two-month old baby boy at their home, after a video recording showing her hitting and kicking the infant was posted by the parents on YouTube.

The maid, who is in her mid 20s, has been released on bail, after questioning by the police. But investigations are still ongoing.

The baby's parents were shocked when they saw recorded images of the maid abusing the baby, which were captured by a closed circuit TV they had installed recently.

They filed a police report on Jan 26, and also posted the video recording on YouTube, outraging many Netizens.

The series of six videos has attracted more than 36,000 views.

Many who saw the videos bristled with anger.

PrincessJuly83 said in her posting: 'I'm so angry after watching the videos. How can the maid do something inhuman like that?? I'm a mother of 2 and I know how heart breaking it is to see your own baby getting abused liked that. I hope the baby is fine, without any internal or external injuries.'

Another said: 'I am so upset about it. Really angry with the maid. Never comfortable with having maid taking care of baby and young children without other adult around them. Good that you have CCTV and find out early. poor baby.'

Another angry Netizen added: 'Can we know which agency this maid is from? And what is the punishment for this maid?. Hope she doesn't just get away by just sending back to her country. Hope that baby is healthy though.'

The employers said they decided to install the CCTV after reading media reports of maids abusing their young charges.

They were horrified and shocked when the very first video recording they did caught the maid in the violent act.

'The maid appears mild and gentle in front of us. We never suspect she would be so cruel to our baby,' Madam Wong was quoted as saying by an online site.

She decided to put up the video on YouTube to warn other parents who have maids looking other their babies.
