Fergie: 'Big Four' Games Have Been Crucial

[quote]Manchester United are now red-hot favourites to clinch another Premier League title thanks to Chelsea's draw with Wigan Athletic on Monday night. But if they do finish the job off, boss Sir Alex Ferguson reckons it's the results against the big teams that have proved the difference.

With the game at Stamford Bridge still to come, United have amassed an impressive 13 points from a possible 15 against the rest of the big four this season.
As well as the 2-0 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford the Red Devils have also collected four points against Arsenal and a maximum six against Liverpool.

By comparison, Arsenal have notched just six points while Chelsea and Liverpool have done even worse with five and four respectively.

Stats like that, says Fergie, prove the difference between champions and pretenders. 揑 said results between the top four would be the key this season and that抯 been proved right," said the Scot. 揟hank goodness we抳e performed well and got results against our main rivals, because we抳e dropped points elsewhere.

"The Premier League has become much tougher in recent seasons. For example, we lost six points to Manchester City this season, which is something we didn抰 expect. We also lost at West Ham and Bolton," Fergie continued. "But the key is keeping those setbacks to a minimum. We抳e managed to do that and if we can win our next two games, then we抣l be champions.擺/quote]

Ronaldo signing impossible - Real

Real Madrid sporting director Predrag Mijatovic concedes it would be "impossible" to sign Manchester United ace Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.

Mijatovic was quoted as saying on Tuesday that the Spanish giants were looking at Ronaldo to become the new 'face' of the club, in a similar way to former France playmaker Zinedine Zidane during his time at Madrid.

Mijatovic has made no secret of his admiration for the 23-year-old Portugal international, but admits there is no chance of taking him to the Bernabeu any time soon.

"Right now it is impossible to sign Cristiano Ronaldo. Who would not like to have him in their team? But we need to be realistic because his would be a very difficult signing," said Mijatovic, who also denied he had met with United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz.

"There has been talk about lots of things that have nothing to do with reality. They have also said I have been seen with Carlos Queiroz and it is not true," the former Madrid striker added in Marca.

Ferguson Admits Contract Slips As Pique Ponders Exit

6/04/2008 12:01                                Withspeculation growing that defender Gerard Pique is pondering an OldTrafford exit, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has admittedthat the club cannot always tie down the players they want to long-termcontracts.
While Sir Alex Ferguson was delighted to confirm earlier this week thatManchester United are close to signing Rio Ferdinand on a new long-termcontract, another defender, Catalonian defender Gerard Pique, could bemoving one. And Ferdinand's new deal could help sway Pique's decision.

Regarding Ferdinand, Ferguson told Sky Sports News yesterday: "He is onthe point of signing a new contract - yes. Rio's played a fantasticpart this season. Sometimes he's been captain and he's done really wellthere too."

And he added: "We always try to get players on new contracts. Sometimes we maybe slip up but not often."

Among those slips was losing Gabriel Heinze last summer. It could havebeen worse - the Argentine full-back nearly joined arch-rivalsLiverpool.

Another full-back, Wes Brown, is out of contract in the summer and thusfree to sign, should he wish, for another Premiership club in twomonths' time.

And Pique and Patrice Evra are out of contract at the end of next season.

United opened contract renewal talks with Evra soon after NemanjaVidic's new deal was finalised in January, but Pique's advisors arelistening to interested parties in Spain, with his home-town clubBarcelona thought to be keen on taking him back to Camp Nou.

Pique recently warned that he was not prepared to spend much more ofhis career sitting on the bench, but the Ferdinand-Vidic partnership isthe rock on which United's outstanding season to date has been built,so it is difficult to see Pique displacing either of those two in thepecking order any time soon - though Vidic's injury has given Pique arare opportunity in recent games.

HE Premier League trophy is on the brink of being packaged and stamped:`Property of Manchester United' in readiness for delivery to OldTrafford again.

But even while preparations are being put inplace to salute United, Sir Alex Ferguson is already planning ahead fornext season's effort to win it three times on the trot.

"I don't need to spend, but I will," he has said.

"I think there is an area where we are short and we can stock up on that a bit."

Thereseems little doubt that the area Ferguson believes is lightweight isthe striker's department. The United manager pioneered the luxury offour senior forwards in the late 90s when he gelled the Treble winningquartet of Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Ole Solskjaer and Teddy Sheringham.

But this season he has effectively plotted a route through the campaign with one man short in his forward unit.

So who might be on United's radar?

KLAAS JAN HUNTELAAR

Ajax抯24-year-old Dutch hitman is one of the most prolific goalscorers on thecontinent this season. He is second behind Cristiano Ronaldo in therace to be Europe抯 Golden Shoe winner as the number one scorer.Huntelaar has scored 32 goals in the Dutch League this term but on thepoints system adopted in the Golden Shoe awards Ronaldo抯 27 Leaguegoals in the tougher English game give him a higher overall score. Ajaxknow they face a difficult summer attempting to keep hold of theirpredator with Europe抯 elite monitoring his game in Holland. Hissuitors will no doubt be wanting to secure his signature before Euro2008 in case his value soars during the tournament. Only drawback forthe Reds might be that he is a scorer in the Rued van Nistelrooy mouldand United抯 weren抰 as successful silverware-wise with their formerprolific Dutchman as they have been without him.

KARIM BENZEMA

The20-year-old French striker confirmed his clinical finishing abilitywhen he scored against United for Lyon in France in the ChampionsLeague. Strong, powerful skilful he turned and found a way past bothRio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic in the last 16 match in the StadeGerland. Likened by French soccer luminaries to Zinedine Zidane he isone of the most sought after young forwards around. Though he haspledged next season to Lyon any club prepared to pay upwards of

United's performances on the pitch are, in part, born out oftogetherness and camaraderie off it. Rio Ferdinand gives us the insidetrack on life in the first-team dressing room...

Best trainer: Scholesy. He抯 such a good passer, and his team always wins in training.

Worst trainer: I抎 say Wes or Wazza. They must be saving themselves for the games.

Fittestsquad member: Wayne or Ronaldo. They抮e both explosive players thatcould run at the same pace in the last minute of a game as they couldin the first.

Most outrageous skill: Obvious
