Powerful quake strikes central Italy, killing 50
Thousands homeless as magnitude 6.3 temblor topples churches, buildings

L'AQUILA, Italy - A powerful earthquake in mountainous central Italy knocked down whole blocks of buildings early Monday as residents slept, killing at least 50 people and trapping many more, officials said. Thousands were homeless.

The earthquake's epicenter was about 70 miles northeast of Rome near the medieval city of L'Aquila. It struck at 3:32 a.m. local time in a quake-prone region that has had at least nine smaller jolts since the beginning of April. The U.S. Geological Survey said Monday's quake was magnitude 6.3, but Italy's National Institute of Geophysics put it at 5.8.

Interior Minister Roberto Moroni, arriving in L'Aquila hours after the quake, said 50 people had been killed.

Officials said the death toll was likely to rise as rescue crews clawed through the debris of fallen homes.

L'Aquila Mayor Massimo Cialente said some 100,000 people had left their homes and that many buildings in the city's historic center were damaged. Slabs of walls, twisted steel supports, furniture and wire fences were strewn about the streets and a gray dust carpeted sidewalks, cars and residents.

Students trapped

As ambulances screamed through the city, firefighters aided by dogs worked feverishly to reach people trapped in fallen buildings, including a student dormitory where half a dozen university students were believed still inside.

Outside the half-collapsed dorm, tearful young people huddled together, wrapped in blankets, some still in their slippers after being roused from sleep by the quake.

"We managed to come down with other students but we had to sneak through a hole in the stairs as the whole floor came down," said student Luigi Alfonsi, 22. "I was in bed

Lebih 90 maut gempa di Itali

GAMBAR menunjukkan sebuah bangunan
ranap dekat L'Aquila, Itali semalam.

L'AQUILA - Satu gempa bumi kuat menggegarkan tengah Itali ketika penduduk sedang tidur pagi semalam menyebabkan lebih 90 orang maut manakala 50,000 lagi hilang tempat tinggal.

- AFP

rasanya .. kena tengok keadaan geografi/keadaan kat sana jugak
dari pola penempatan deme, jenis bangunan, jenis material bangunan, struktur + keadaan bangunan tu

kalau banyak bangunan lama yg strukturnya pun dah lama, memang aa buat lg senang runtuh

pastu mungkin sbb faktor bila kejadian tu berlaku - waktu tempatannya 3.30am - orang tgh tido
mungkin tu lg satu faktor yg memungkinkan lebih banyak mangsa/korban

lagi satu - mungkin deme 'tak jangka' akan jadi gempa bumi .. kuat plak tu!
so persediaan tu agak kureng .. kalau jadi cenggini, buatkan deme layi kele kabuk

tapi .. 6.3 tu memang kuat aa .. mungkin ada aftershock yg tak kurang jugak hebatnya

Italian rescuers are continuing to search for survivors under buildings wrecked by a devastating earthquake which killed at least 207 people.

With 1,500 injured and some 17,000 homeless after Monday's quake struck L'Aquila and its region, many survivors spent the night in shelters.

One woman was rescued alive almost 23 hours after the quake, but 34 people are still thought to be missing.
Strong aftershocks were continuing almost 36 hours after the quake hit.

One was strong enough to move furniture in buildings in Rome, 95km (60 miles) away.

Rescuers were forced to briefly postpone their efforts as the after-shocks dislodged more rubble from buildings.

It remained a very difficult and dangerous job as rubble was still moving and houses could still collapse, says BBC correspondent Duncan Kennedy in Onna, a badly damaged village in the region.

As rescue efforts continued:
  • A 23-year-old student was pulled alive with the help of specialist cavers from the rubble of a four-storey building in L'Aquila more than 22 hours after the quake struck
  • One body was retrieved from a university dormitory at dawn on Tuesday, while rescuers continue to search for about four others believed trapped inside
  • L'Aquila and the surrounding area were without water

3 mangsa gempa bumi selamat

- Agensi

Aftershock sows panic as Italy quake toll hits 228

By Deepa Babington and Antonella Cinelli

L'AQUILA, Italy (Reuters) - Strong aftershocks shook central Italy on Tuesday and hampered rescue efforts after the country's worst earthquake in three decades killed at least 228 people and left thousands homeless.

The strongest aftershock since Monday's quake scattered rescue workers and toppled buildings, including parts of the basilica and the station, as night fell on the historic mountain city of L'Aquila, which bore the brunt of the disaster.

L'Aquila's mayor said one person died in the neighbourhood of Roio, but firefighters could not confirm this. The 5.6 magnitude aftershock was felt in Rome, 100 km (60 miles) to the west, where furniture shook in the upper floors of buildings.

"We advise people not to go back into their homes," Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi told a news conference in L'Aquila, adding that efforts to find people alive would go on for at least two more days.

Hundreds of emergency workers, many of them volunteers, used mechanical diggers and their bare hands to remove piles of rubble. Rescuers celebrated after a 20-year-old girl was found alive 42 hours after the quake under the rubble of a four-storey building, but the death toll rose steadily throughout the day.

A fireman from the port of Pescara who had come to L'Aquila to help rescue efforts collapsed in tears after unearthing the body of his stepdaughter, who was studying at the university.

At least 228 bodies were being stored in a makeshift mortuary at a school for Italy's Finance Police outside L'Aquila, local media reported. Some 1,500 people were injured, about 100 seriously, and fewer than 50 were missing.

Working by floodlight, rescuers used a crane to gradually dismantle a ruined university dormitory in the hope of finding four students trapped inside. Sniffer dogs aided the hunt.

"We're trying to get in through every hole possible, but we haven't succeeded in reaching them," said a police official.

AFTERSHOCKS SOW PANIC

As night fell for a second time since the disaster, thousands of homeless people sought shelter in villages of blue tents set up by authorities. Berlusconi, who has declared a national emergency and sent troops to the area, promised 20 tent camps and 16 field kitchens to accommodate 14,000 people.

Authorities estimate 17,000 people have lost their homes, leaving them facing a grim Easter weekend. With many local churches badly damaged, people prepared to celebrate the feast in makeshift chapels in the tent villages.

The aftershocks sowed panic, with residents running out of tents screaming and crying.

"Even here, where you know that nothing can happen you still feel afraid. The fear of the sound, the earth moving, it just makes you feel so small," said Ilaria Ciani, 35. "In the last two nights I must have slept about three hours at most."

With his government already facing a high deficit and huge public debt, Berlusconi said he would try to access hundreds of millions of euros in EU disaster funds to help rebuild the rugged Abruzzo region of central Italy.

Shows of solidarity came from home and abroad, with US President Barack Obama and Russia's Vladimir Putin among the leaders calling Berlusconi to express sympathy and offer aid.

Italian soccer teams said revenue from this weekend's matches would be sent to help victims. Universities and newspapers throughout the country took collections, while hotels provided thousands of cheap rooms for survivors and rescuers.

Officials said the quake would severely affect the region's economy, much of which is based on tourism, agriculture and small, family-run businesses. Police increased their patrols on the streets amid reports of looting.

Some residents and experts expressed anger that even supposedly earthquake-proof modern buildings had collapsed.

"In California, an earthquake like this one would not have killed a single person," said Franco Barberi, head of a committee assessing quake risks at the Civil Protection Agency.

Monday's quake was particularly lethal because it struck shortly after 3:30 a.m. (0130 GMT) as residents slept. Flattening houses, centuries-old churches and other buildings in 26 cities and towns, it was the worst since November 1980, when some 2,735 people died in southern Italy.

Italy to hold quake funeral, rescuers dig in rubble
By Deepa Babington and Antonella Cinelli

L'AQUILA, Italy (Reuters) - Italy prepared on Wednesday to begin burying some of the 260 people killed in medieval towns flattened by a quake, while rescuers hampered by aftershocks hunted for people who may be buried alive in rubble.

A mass state funeral for the victims and a national day of mourning are expected to be held on Friday, although the first two private services were due on Wednesday. Pope Benedict prayed for the victims and said he would visit the area soon.

The death toll climbed to 260 after rescuers pulled more bodies from the rubble and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said in total 28,000 had lost their homes, with 17,000 now living in tents and the rest in free hotel rooms or staying with family.

Aftershocks from Italy's worst quake in three decades lasted until Wednesday in mountainous Abruzzo and were felt in Rome.

The strongest 5.6 magnitude shock late on Tuesday toppled parts of the basilica and station in the city of L'Aquila, which bore the brunt of the disaster, and claimed one more victim.

"We're in shock because we have lost our loved ones, the town has been reduced to rubble with over 40 dead and lots of them were young, a whole generation cancelled out," said Antonella Massi in Onna, a village that once had 300 residents and was left with hardly a building untouched by the quake.

Berlusconi, who has declared an emergency and sent in thousands of troops, drafted a tough new law against looting.

"Whoever is low enough to try to take advantage of a tragedy like this shows a total lack of morals and will be very severely punished," said Berlusconi, visiting L'Aquila for the third consecutive day to direct the emergency response.

Asking countries wishing to send aid to restore one of the region's ruined medieval churches instead, Berlusconi's hands-on approach could boost his high popularity rating, pollsters say.

The gaffe-prone premier risked appearing insensitive when he told one German television channel that the thousands of people living in tents "should look on it as a camping weekend".

But he also said he had now gone 44 hours without sleeping, the 72-year-old prime minister joked to a reporter that this was "not bad for a 35-year-old".

One estimate done for insurers put the damage to Italy's economy, which is already reeling from the worst recession since World War Two, at between 2 billion and 3 billion euros (between $1.5 billion and $2.2 billion), in the context of overall economic output for Italy of about 1.5 trillion euros.

GRIM EASTER

Officials say the quake will have a huge impact in a region which mostly lives off tourism, farming and family businesses.

Berlusconi vowed to build a whole new town near L'Aquila and Agriculture Minister Luca Zaia, visiting Onna, urged Italians to help the region's economy "by thinking of them when the holiday season begins and principally buying products from Abruzzo".

The survivors face a grim Easter weekend. With many local churches badly damaged, people prepared to celebrate the feast in makeshift chapels in the tent villages.

The government and hotel owners offered free shelter for the homeless in hotels on the Adriatic coast.

"Go to the coast. It's Easter, take a break and we will pay for it," Berlusconi told victims at a tent camp on Tuesday.

At least 250 bodies were being stored in a makeshift mortuary outside L'Aquila.

On Tuesday night rescuers burst into applause when a 20-year-old woman was found alive 42 hours after the quake in the ruins of a four-storey building.

Many of the victims were students at L'Aquila's university, such as 24-year-old student and soccer player Giuseppe Chiavaroli, due to be buried on Wednesday in his hometown.

One fire-fighter from the port of Pescara who came to help rescue efforts collapsed in tears after unearthing the body of his stepdaughter, who was studying there.

Italian soccer teams said revenue from this weekend's matches would be sent to help victims. Universities, papers and TV channels took collections, while hotels provided thousands of cheap rooms for survivors and rescuers.

Some residents and experts said they were angry that even supposedly earthquake-proof modern buildings had collapsed.

"In California, an earthquake like this one would not have killed a single person," said Franco Barberi, head of a committee assessing quake risks at the Civil Protection Agency.
