Curse of the Best Actress Oscar

Who knew the little gold man was such a homewrecker? With the news that Sandra Bullock's marriage to Jesse James may be on the rocks mere days after her Best Actress win for "The Blind Side" at the 2010 Academy Awards, and Monday's news that last year's Best Actress winner Kate Winslet and her director hubby Sam Mendes had split, it seems that the "Best Actress Oscar Curse" is more than just a Hollywood urban myth.
Case in point: of the last ten Best Actress Oscar winners, five have officially split with their partners within a year of winning their prized trophy, and that's not including Bullock, who we really hope had a perfectly normal explanation for canceling her London "Blind Side" premiere today. Sandy, please say it was just a lost passport!
Julia Roberts kicked off the curse in 2001 when she split with her hunky boyfriend of four years, Benjamin Bratt, just three months after her Oscar win for "Erin Brockovich." In 2003, Halle Berry (who claimed the gold for "Monster's Ball" in 2002) separated from her husband Eric Benet. The couple had a well documented history of trouble in their marriage -- he reportedly went to rehab for sex addiction -- so the split wasn't too much of a surprise.
Nicole Kidman won for "The Hours" in 2003, and Charlize Theron for "Monster" in 2004. Nic had already long split from Tom Cruise by then, and Charlize just broke up with Stuart Townsend this year, so we reckon these two were somehow protected from the black magic... Nicole is Australian and Charlize is from South Africa. Could it be that foreigners are protected?
The next couple to fall victim to the golden dude's voodoo were Hillary Swank and Chad Lowe. Safe after her win in 2000 for "Boy's Don't Cry," Hilary was struck down the second time around when she won for "Million Dollar Baby" in 2005. The couple announced their split the following January, with Swank citing Lowe's "substance abuse" as the cause. In 2006, Reese Witherspoon ("Walk the Line") and Ryan Phillippe bit the dust seven months after the Academy Awards amidst allegations of cheating on his part.
2009's Best Actress winner Kate Winslet ("The Reader") announced her separation from Sam Mendes on Monday after nearly seven years of marriage. There goes my theory that only American gals are subject to the curse! So far, there's been no fiery accusations from the English actress or her director husband. They apparently just "grew apart," according to a source at People magazine. We could buy the explanation that they're busy people, or, maybe Mendes was just bitter because Kate won for "The Reader" rather than his film "Revolutionary Road," which was eligible the same year?
Regardless, we can't help but wonder if this string of related breakups be simply coincidence. We'd like to think that the Oscar voodoo is just a series of freak occurrences, but more than likely, it's for the sad and simple fact that the weight of having their wife or girlfriend win Hollywood's biggest prize is just too much for these men's fragile egos to bear. Not to put a dampener on your golden glory, but Helen Mirren ("The Queen," 2007) and Marion Cotillard ("La Vie En Rose," 2008), you've been warned... |

Jesse James Apologizes To Sandra Bullock Following Infidelity Rumor
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- One day after Jesse James was hit with allegations he cheated on wife Sandra Bullock, the reality star has issued an apology, but stopped short of confirming the rumored infidelity.
James called "the vast majority" of claims that have surfaced "untrue and unfounded," in a statement the star issued to Access Hollywood on Thursday.
"I will not dignify these private matters with any further public comment," his statement continued. "There is only one person to blame for this whole situation, and that is me."
James apologized to Bullock and his three children, children he was photographed taking to school on Thursday, followed by the paparazzi.
"It's because of my poor judgment that I deserve everything bad that is coming my way," his said in the statement. "This has caused my wife and kids pain and embarrassment beyond comprehension and I am extremely saddened to have brought this on them. I am truly very sorry for the grief I have caused them. I hope one day they can find it in their hearts to forgive me."
On Wednesday, In Touch magazine revealed their newest cover story -- titled "The Ultimate Betrayal," which centered around an interview with a woman named Michelle "Bombshell" McGee, who claimed to the mag she had an 11-month affair with James, including while Bullock was shooting "The Blind Side."
"Michelle had several text messages," In Touch West Coast Bureau Chief Ashley Dillahunty told Access. "In the magazine -- we put the text messages in there." According to McGee, James led her to believe that he and Bullock were separated. She also claimed her sexual relations with James took place inside his West Coast Choppers shop.
McGee calls herself "Bombshell" on the Web site, So-Cal Glamour Girls and she claims she grew up Amish, but left the church and does not speak to her parents. In a clip from a Player's Network video found on youtube, McGee explained one of her tattoos, located on her forehead.
"It says 'Pray for us sinners,' because we are all sinners in life," she said in the video. As the cover story allegations were emerging, Warner Bros., the film behind "The Blind Side," issued a statement on behalf of the film's star, Bullock, who said she would not be attending the British premiere of the film she won the Best Actress Oscar for.
"Due to unforeseen personal reasons a trip abroad to support 'The Blind Side' has been deemed impossible at this time," the studio's statement from Sandra read. "I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and thank you for your continued support of the film."
And on Wednesday night, People ran a story claiming a source told the mag the actress had left the home she shares with James. According to the source, Bullock left their home on Monday.
