Moving out of dad’s shadowANALYSIS
By JOCELINE TAN

The young but ambitious Nurul Izzah Anwar is about to ruffle feathers big time with her determination to run for deputy president against some of the biggest names in PKR.
THE fight for the deputy president’s post of PKR has taken a sensational twist with Nurul Izzah Anwar (pic) all prepared to run for it.

She is also challenging the party headquarters ruling that she does not have the requisite two nominations to vie for the No 2 post.
Her entry into this big-time contest is bound to whip up a storm in the party.
To add to the potential drama, Nurul Izzah has apparently not consulted her parents who are both the party’s de facto leader and president.
Highly placed sources said that of late, the Lembah Pantai MP had been making decisions on her political career independent of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Her earlier decision to go for the vice-president’s post was one such instance.
She has also not sounded out Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail although mother and daughter have a close bond. She had told a confidant that it was better to spring it on her mother who tends to go along with her father.
This means that Nurul Izzah, 30, will be up against other big names already in the race. One of them is no less than her father’s blue-eyed boy Azmin Ali and the other is Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.
Her political ally Datuk Zaid Ibrahim may have to pull out of the race. There is no way Zaid can continue if Nurul Izzah is in.
He had initially declared he would contest only if his friend Khalid is not interested.
Then he changed his mind and said he would give way only to Nurul Izzah.
To change his mind again will further batter his political reputation.
The former Umno minister painted himself into two tight corners but he now has an opportunity for a graceful exit.
Besides, Zaid, who had come in on such high hopes and credentials, has floundered badly in his campaign.
There was talk he would go for the No 1 post if he has to withdraw from the No 2 contest.
In fact, he spent the last couple of days in East Malaysia trying to drum up support to do just that but the response on the ground was just not there.
His supporters over there did not want him to go against “the lady,” as Dr Wan Azizah is known.
The Malays are very fond of saying that if you are meant to have it, then you will get it. Perhaps Zaid, who has a best-selling book by the title Saya pun Melayu should just go along with that.
Nurul Izzah’s position depends on whether the party headquarters is going to cave in to arguments over the deadline for nominations. Party officials said she received only one valid deputy president nomination from Keningau after nominations closed on Sunday.
Her supporters are claiming she also received nominations from Semporna in Sabah and Selangau in Sarawak. They are also claiming they were made to understand that the deadline for nominations had been extended beyond last Sunday.
Nurul’s backers believe she will be the “breath of fresh air” that the party needs and that her candidature will give the party that “paradigm shift” needed to take things to another level.
“She’s clean, smart, charming and pretty. She has no baggage and, as they say, women hold up half the sky,” said one of her backers.
Then, of course, there is the magical family name. And, as one of Nurul Izzah’s supporters asked rhetorically, who else but Anwar’s own flesh and blood who will give her all to fight for his freedom in the event that he has to return to jail?
Her political ambitions have rattled the other women leaders in the party. Some of them had criticised her earlier vice-president bid as “too ambitious” for someone this young. They said she was inexperienced and claimed that it smacked of nepotism.
Azmin, for one, is unlikely to take it sitting down. His supporters will see it as Nurul Izzah taking her dislike for their man a little too far, that she is confusing the interest of the party with her own personal feelings about Azmin.
As it is, Azmin’s people are quite uncomfortable with Khalid’s presence in the race and are worried about Khalid’s Mentri Besar clout.
Taking on Nurul Izzah will not be all that difficult but it will have to be handled delicately.
But the big question is how Anwar himself will respond to Nurul Izzah’s latest move. He was not happy with her vice-president’s bid but this may see him hitting the roof.
The de facto leader is all-powerful in PKR but seems to have limited control over his daughter.
It is not going to look good with daddy as the powerful de facto leader, mummy as president and daughter going for deputy president.
Whichever way they argue out the situation, it will come across as nepotism. It is going to look worse than the Pak Lah and his son-in-law scenario or even the Lims and the Ngeh-and-Nga cousins in DAP.
Nurul Izzah has many hurdles to clear to convince her party why she deserves this important seat.
