Wan Zack kena kad merah rupanya.

Kim Swee kecewa
aziman@hmetro.com.my

Mereka mengambil mudah sehingga pihak lawan menjaringkan gol kemenangan,” kata Kim Swee.

Football: Young Tigers Ready To Roar Against Japan

PETALING JAYA, Feb 21 (Bernama) -- The National Under-23 squad will go all out to score a win against Japan although a win in the Asian Zone Group C Olympic qualifying match will not change Malaysia's fortune.

Coach Ong Kim Swee's boys will be hoping to score their first win in the competition when they face Japan, needing a big win, at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, tomorrow.

"Although we failed to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics, a win or a draw against Japan will be a big result for us," he told reporters after a training session at Wisma FAM here Tuesday.

Ong said since the team was injury free and have had enough rest, there was no reason for the players to perform well tomorrow.

London 2012 Olympics: Syrian goalkeeper takes a stand in Homs as national side aim for Olympics

In normal days Abdelbasset Saroot, a 20-year old goalkeeper, would be taking a direct interest in the London Olympic Games football qualifying matches.

He would likely be dreaming of competing at Wembley: with Olympic appearances also serving as a prime opportunity for scouts to assess his considerable height, reach and spring.

He would be readying himself for his team's final pool match on March 14 against Malaysia and a possible Olympic play-off against Senegal next month at Coventry Stadium.

He could even be hearing the sounds of a packed Olympic stadium greeting all of the Olympic athletes in their march at the Opening Ceremony.

But these are not normal days for Saroot especially in his hometown of Homs.

Normally Saroot is the protector of the Syrian football team's fortunes as its star goalkeeper, but now he is a wanted man with a lucrative 4 million lira bounty on his head.

In recent weeks, hundreds of the troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad have been circling the areas close to the Homs’ al-Bassel football stadium, searching for rebels, but also for Saroot, who has risen beyond the football pitch to become a very public and defiant  leader of the rebellion.

Saroot has dodged many attempts on his life, but says he has lost one of his brothers and several friends. He says their bodies were thrown into the streets and tanks drove over them.

But Saroot has been pictured regularly on Youtube, supporting the rebel cause and his defiance has given him a nickname as the "canary" of the protest movement.

He has been shown talking about an attempt on his life before Christmas, and most recently he was pictured leading thousands of people chanting and clapping during funerals of victims in Homs.

Saroot told Al Jazeera: "It's worth it. I'm free. I've travelled all over the world to play football. But freedom is not just about me or about travelling. What about everyone else? Freedom is a big word. It's about freedom of speech and freedom of opinion. If you see something wrong being done, freedom is being able to talk about it."

While Saroot is fleeing soldiers and trying to send his messages to the world, his former footballing team-mates continue their quest to compete in London.

On Wednesday, March 14, the national team will play Malaysia and depending on other results, – specifically if Japan suffer a big loss against Bahrain – a win could propel Syria into the Olympics. They could also qualify through a play-off between the second placed teams in each pool.

Syria shocked the footballing world with a 2-1 win over Japan last month – a result some attribute to the turmoil and shelling of the past 11 months back home.

During that match, played in Jordan, supporters of Syria were openly divided. Some spectators were chanting in support of Assad, others were backing the Japanese as a defiant gesture to the regime.

Football in the Middle East has long been a public relations symbol of a country's fortune and always features presidential patronage.

Syria's surprising progress through the Olympic qualifying tournament, at a time when others from stable backgrounds like Australia have failed, has given the Syrian population something to be distracted by. For Assad it might be a moment of political pride if Syria makes it to London.

For Saroot though, as he told Canadian journalist Michelle Shepherd just before Christmas:  “Defending people’s rights — that’s real fame.”

Malaysia Gagal Peroleh Mata Tunduk Kepada Syria 0-3

- BERNAMA
