Emergency services respond after multiple people stabbed at Sydney shopping centre

A baby is reportedly among those injured after several people were stabbed at a Sydney shopping mall, with five victims confirmed dead.

The suspected attacker was also shot dead by a police inspector, with Assistant Police Commissioner Anthony Cooke adding that the man acted alone and there was “no continuing threat.”

He said officials didn’t know who the offender was yet, and there was no indication of motivation.

Emergency services were called to Westfield Bondi Junction just before 4pm local time following the reports, New South Wales Police said in a statement.

“People are urged to avoid the area,” it said. “Inquiries are continuing in relation to the incident and there are no further details.”
Hundreds of people were evacuated from the shopping centre after the incident, news website news.com.au reported.

State broadcaster ABC reported some people remained trapped inside.
At least two witnesses reported hearing shots. “Even 20 minutes after people were rushed out of the mall, I saw Swat teams of people sweeping the surrounding streets,” a witness told Reuters.

Police inspector who shot suspect had acted to save lives
Assistant commissioner Anthony Cooke said the female inspector who shot the attacker had acted to save lives.

“This all happened very, very quickly - the officer that was in the vicinity attended on her own, was guided to the location of the offender by people who were in the centre.

“She took the actions that she did saving a range of people’s lives; an inspector, a senior police officer - she was on her own. She engaged immediately on her arrival to the scene.”

Witness saw someone lying injured before taking shelter in store
One eyewitness told Reuters news agency that they saw someone lying down injured and were looking to see what was going on.

“Then we saw all these people running towards us and then we heard a shot and my husband dragged us into the Adairs shop and then we got the lady there trying to lock the doors and then she couldn’t lock the front door so we went in the office which was all locked and then we were in there until the police came to get us.”

Mark Speakman, the New South Wales opposition leader, has praised the emergency services and sent his condolences to the victims of the attack.

In a statement, he said: “Tonight we are shocked and saddened by today’s tragedy at Bondi Junction. The NSW Police have advised that the situation is now under control. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and loved ones.

“The NSW Opposition expresses our gratitude to our police, health workers, other first responders and members of the public, and particularly to those who displayed extraordinary bravery in the face of tragedy.

“We pray for the speedy recovery of those in hospital tonight. Now, and in the coming days and weeks, it’s important that those affected by this tragedy receive the care and support they need.

“As a community we’ll need to come together to support those who have suffered injury, loss and trauma today.”

Cooke said the suspect acted alone and there was “no continuing threat.” He said officials didn’t know who the offender was yet, and there was no indication of motivation.

“This is quite raw,” he said.

A knife-wielding man who killed six people in a Sydney shopping centre before being shot dead has been identified by Australian police.

Joel Cauchi, 40, sent the crowded Westfield Bondi Junction complex into panic on Saturday when he began stabbing people with a long blade.

Five women and a man died. Several others, including a baby, were injured.

Authorities said the attack was most likely "related to the mental health of the individual involved".

In an update on Sunday, New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke said they were still trying to notify families of the victims.

"Two of them appear to have no family in Australia," he told reporters.

He said Mr Cauchi, who was from Queensland, was previously known to police and had bought a storage unit in Sydney.

The assistant commissioner reiterated that the attacker did not appear to be motivated by "any particular ideology or motivation".

The nine-month-old girl "had surgery overnight and is currently in a critical condition and is in ICU," Health Minister Ryan Park told ABC news.

"Now, we certainly are hoping that she gets through this but there is a long way to go."

Her mother, Ash Good, was among those killed. Witnesses have told local media that Ms Good managed to pass her baby to bystanders in the moments after she was wounded.

The owners of a health clinic where she once worked told the BBC that Ms Good was a "beautiful person".

"We are deeply saddened by the horrific news of the Bondi Junction attacks and our heartfelt condolences go out to all those affected," said Danni and Coby du Preez of Muscle Medicine on Sunday.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Australians were "waking up to try to deal with the shock and trauma" of what had happened.

Describing the attack as "unspeakable and really just beyond comprehension", Mr Albanese again praised the actions of a lone senior policewoman who confronted Mr Cauchi and shot him dead as horror gripped the mall.

"The wonderful inspector who ran into danger by herself and removed the threat that was there to others, without thinking about the risks to herself," the prime minister said, thanking her and emergency teams.

State officials said nine people had been taken to hospital after the incident, and another three people had sought medical attention overnight. About 40 paramedics were initially involved in the response.
