Scientists: Jellyfish numbers surge due to climate change
Scientists say the number of jellyfish are on the rise thanks to the increasing acidity of the world’s oceans driving away the blubbery creatures' natural predators.
The warning came in a report into ocean acidification – an often overlooked side effect of burning fossil fuel.
Studies have shown that higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere doesn’t just trigger climate change but can make the oceans more acidic.
Jellyfish invade Israeli power plant
Workers at a power plant in Hadera, Israel, are battling a sticky problem: Israel Electric Corp. is warning that jellyfish could shut down a turbine plant and cause rolling blackouts in Israeli cities.
The turbines are cooled using seawater and as the plant sucks in water the jellyfish come with it. Over the past three days, workers say they've removed about 100 tons of jellyfish from the filters.

Jellyfish keep UK nuclear plant shut
An invasion of jellyfish into a cooling water pool at a Scottish nuclear power plant kept its nuclear reactors offline on Wednesday, a phenomenon which may grow more common in future, scientists said.
Two reactors at EDF Energy's Torness nuclear power plant on the Scottish east coast remained shut a day after they were manually stopped due to masses of jellyfish obstructing cooling water filters.
Nuclear power plants draw water from nearby seas or rivers to cool down their reactors, but if the filters which keep out marine animals and seaweed are clogged, the station shuts down to maintain temperature and safety standards.
Britain's Office for Nuclear Regulation said power plants follow a pre-planned programme when these situations occur.
Latest plant availability data from network operator National Grid showed Torness reactor 1 would return to service on July 5 and reactor 2 on July 6, but operator EDF Energy was unable to give a restart date.
Jellyfish invade Florida beaches
A surge of jellyfish wreaked havoc in the U.S. during the country’s big Fourth of July holiday weekend.
Almost 2,000 beach-goers were stung as they celebrated Independence Day weekend in the surf at Volusia County, Florida.

Jellyfishes attack a nuclear plant in Scotland
A nuclear power plant in eastern Scotland had to close reactors after a large mass of jellyfish was discovered in the marine water filtration devices, said sources from inside the company.
“Torness nuclear power plant’s both units were manually shut down on June 28 due to large masses of jellyfish found in the coolers water filters,” said a representative of EDF Energy, the company that manages the plant near Dunbar.
They explained that the closure was only a precautionary measure and insisted that “there was never a question of public danger” and that there was no environmental impact what so ever.
Reducing the flow of cold water due to jellyfish, algae and other marine wastes is an usual practice in the safety specifications of the plant, so they weren’t caught by surprise, said the statement.
Actions to remove the jellyfish from the waters near the nuclear power plant are underway and the staff monitors the marine activity to detect any other invasion of jellyfish.
“The reactors will be restarted once the situation is under control,” said an EDF representative. |

Aku rasa ada hikmah nya. Allah mahu umatnya berfikir bahawa secanggih mana pun teknologi yg ada / ilmu yaang ada. Tapi haiwan lembut seperti Jellyfish sudah cukup menyusahkan manusia. Baru hantar Jellyfish dah kelam kabut. Subannallah.....
Setiap yg berlaku pasti ada hikmahnya. |

Penah tgk kt Nat Geo
Jellyfish ni memang jenis yang kalau lagi bunuh lagi berganda-ganda die membiak.
kat Jepun benda ni memang dah lama jadi masalah esp kepada nelayan sebab die buat ikan mati.
Jadi nelayan bila tangkap ikan dpat ikan mati sikit dan selebihnya semua jellyfish.
Pernah dia tunjuk nelayan tu dapat berapa eko ikan kecik je walaupun bot die besar gedabak.
Tak tau pulak benda ni dah merebak sambai seluruh dunia... |
