Johnny Depp on Fatherhood and 'Finding Neverland.'

Peter Pan creator J.M. BARRIE loved children, and who better to portray him in a movie than JOHNNY DEPP, who consistently captures the imaginations of moviegoers young and old -- and is himself a father of two? We caught up with Johnny to get his take on fame, fatherhood and 'Finding Neverland,' in theaters Nov. 12.

"Being a father of two certainly brings a different dynamic into every and any role you play," Johnny tells ET. "With Barrie, who [had an] obsession with that stage of life, and the honesty and purity that children have -- I witness it every day -- even if I was trying to keep it out, it would sneak in."

Inspired by events in the life of Scottish author James Matthew Barrie in turn-of-the-century Edwardian England, 'Finding Neverland' begins with Barrie's latest play receiving a tepid reception. In desperate need of inspiration, Barrie finds his muse in the unlikely form of four fatherless boys and their recently widowed mother, Sylvia (KATE WINSLET). Up against the disapproval of his wife (RADHA MITCHELL) and the boys' grandmother (JULIE CHRISTIE), Barrie takes it upon himself to enchant the boys with games and wild, far-fetched tales. In turn, Barrie begins to write his timeless tale, Peter Pan, risking everything for the most important opening night in his life.

Johnny says he's happy to do films "that are pretty accessible to my kids right now," and only has raves for his young co-star, FREDDIE HIGHMORE, who plays one of the boys. In fact, he recommended Freddie to director TIM BURTON, who cast him as Charlie Bucket in the new update of 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,' in which Johnny plays Willy Wonka!

"He's a magic kid," says Johnny. "Freddie's all magic, all purity, all honesty. I refer to him as a kid because he was 10 years old when we did the film. He's 12 years old now and we're doing 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' together, but he is as good a pal as any I've got. He's someone I consider a great friend, and beyond that, a great actor. He's just a really good human being."

Once he hangs up his Wonka hat, Johnny will return to the role of Jack Sparrow for the back-to-back sequels of 'Pirates of the Caribbean.' As for those rumors of ROLLING STONES rocker KEITH RICHARDS playing Jack's father, Johnny says, "Keith and I have spoken about it sort of off the cuff, just kind of throwing that idea around, and he seems open to it. I think it would be great fun for a couple of days."

Johnny was nominated for his first Academy Award
