Conflicting accounts by duo
KUALA SELANGOR, Feb 28 — Two fishermen who came to the aid of eight Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) personnel involved in a plane crash on Friday are now claiming to be the first to rescue the crew.
Sulian Abd Malik and Sarri Mohd Noor, both 51, related the same account to Malay Mail. Police have recorded their statements but have not interviewed them further regarding the incident.
The first account that appeared following the crash was that four fishermen were the first to arrive at the crash site to help the airmen.
Sulian said he saw the plane descending but did not think much of it.
“Then I saw smoke and knew something was not right. I rowed my sampan to check what had happened,” he said yesterday.
“I saw several people waving from some mangrove trees and quickly headed towards them. The first person I helped was a woman officer who was in the waters,” he said.
Sulian said it took him less than 10 minutes to assist all eight personnel onto his boat. They then moved some 100m away from the crash site fearing the plane could explode as a fire broke out in its mid-section.
“I saw a boat and waved for assistance,” he said.
He said there were two fishermen in the other boat – Sarri and Low Kock Seong, 39.
Sulian, who forgot to carry his mobile phone, asked Sarri to inform the authorities about the incident. Sarri and Low then volunteered to transport the crew to the nearest jetty.
Sulian related his experience to Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein who was visiting Abu Hassan Abd Latif’s house yesterday. Abu Hassan died while trying to help rescue the air force personnel.
Sarri, when met later, said he and Low had saved the crew from the crash site.
“I saw five planes performing stunts and even told Low how daring the pilots were. I saw one of the planes heading towards land but thought it was part of the act and we continued to fish,” he said.
Sarri said he suspected something amiss after hearing an explosion and saw smoke.
“We headed towards the crash site and stopped some 100m away. As my eyesight is not good, I told Low to look out for victims, if any. Low then told me he saw several people waving at us near the mangrove trees.”
He said he went to help the victims, including one holding on to a tree.
“I helped them on board while Low called Sulian, who was nearby, to lend a helping hand.”
Sarri said six of the crew members were on his boat while Sulian had the remaining two on his. Sarri then took the crew members, who he said were shivering and trembling, to the Kuala Selangor Fisheries Development Board complex.
“I felt so proud of myself. The officers hugged me before boarding a helicopter that took them to the Subang base. They thanked me several times,” Sarri said. - MalayMail
