A massive earthquake struck off Indonesia on Wednesday, registering a massive 7.9 on the Richter scale, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The agency gave an initial estimate of 8.2, but lowered the temblor's magnitude after further evaluating the data.
The quake was centered about 500 miles southwest of Indonesia's Sumatra island in the Indian Ocean, but was shallow at a depth of only about six miles, meaning it could cause serious damage.
There was no immediate tsunami warning issued for the region.
Indonesia sits on the west edge of the so-called Ring of Fire, a cirle of islands and atols in the Pacific Ocean highly prone to seismic activity. |
