Why are women relegated to task of cleaning men's toilets?

IN Kuala Lumpur, a disconcerting tableau unfolds daily: women toiling away in the restrooms of shopping malls and other public places.

It is imperative to maintain cleanliness in these spaces.

But why are women, particularly those in headscarves, relegated to the task of cleaning men's restrooms?

Cleaning, an essential function of hygiene, is a common responsibility in any society.

However, the specificity of such duties raises questions about gender roles and the potential exploitation of a marginalised group.

The sight of women scrubbing floors near urinals while men attend to their needs is a manifestation of the discrepancy between rhetoric and reality.

The contradictory nature of gendered labour roles in the context of religious norms adds another layer to this conundrum.

While society affirms principles of equality, the sight of women in headscarves cleaning men's restrooms raises questions about the embodiment of social ideals in everyday life.

The heightened cynicism of this issue is evident when juxtaposed against contemporary feminism.

Women's rights activists around the world have made strides in challenging gender norms and asserting equality.

However, the discouraging reality in Malaysia begs the question: where are the celebrated feminists when it comes to defending the rights of women whose jobs are to clean men's restrooms?

The lack of a strong collective voice raising the issue of women working in men's restrooms points to a potential blind spot in the movement that needs to be brought to the centre of public discourse.

As a man, and in a country where Islam is the state religion, I feel uncomfortable entering a restroom when a woman is cleaning there.

Perhaps malls and public restrooms could improve the standards of their operations in this matter.
