Does the Bible say anything about cremation?                                                                                                                                                              In considering funeral plans, many have questions about cremation.
Answer:
The Bible doesn't mention cremation, but we will briefly review its history and tell you how it relates to the Bible's teachings about death and the afterlife. The Greeks introduced cremation to the Western world as early as 1000 B.C. Records of how it came to the Greeks are sketchy, but the custom apparently began as a way to deal with soldiers who died in battle. In order to ensure a funeral and burial by family and fellow citizens, armies burned the corpses of soldiers who died on foreign battlefields. The armies then carried the ashes to their homeland.
The Romans followed the Greek fashion and cremated their military heroes. The practice of cremation grew in popularity in the general population and eventually became a status symbol in Rome. The practice ceased about A.D. 100, probably due to wood shortages, as well as to the lack of encouragement about cremation by religious leaders (mainly the Roman Catholic Church) although the practice was not actually considered taboo. Some thought (erroneously) that cremation would interfere with the promised resurrection from the dead.
Cremation was common in Scandinavia, due to a belief that it "freed the spirit from the flesh" (another belief based upon superstition instead of the Bible). After Western Europe converted to Roman Christianity, cremation was rarely done until the 19th century, except for emergencies such as the mass burials of people who died from the plague. In India and Eastern countries, cremation is both an ancient and a favored means of taking care of the deceased.
Sir Henry Thompson, Queen Victoria's surgeon, revived interest in it in Europe and the United States with the 1874 publication of Cremation: The Treatment of the Body After Death.  Nonetheless, it was not made legal in England until 1884. It grew in favor with the religious community as an alternative to disorderly and protracted wakes. For different reasons, primarily relating to sanitation, it also grew in favor with the medical community.
The first crematorium was built in the United States in 1876, but the practice of cremation has been comparatively unpopular in the United States. By the 1970s, only 8 percent were cremated in the United States, in comparison to Europe where over 50 percent were cremated. In Japan, cremation was illegal until 1875, but is now done nearly 100 percent of the time.
Due in part to a shortage of cemetery space, cremation is becoming more widely done in the United States. Of all the major religions, only the Orthodox Jewish faith forbids it. Resistance from cemetery owners and undertakers diminished as they have learned that cremation is no less profitable for them than other means of burial. (Source: New Encyclopedia Britannica,  15th edition.)

The United Church of God recognizes that cremation in no way interferes with God's ability to resurrect the dead. Additionally, pagan religious customs about death or the afterlife are not linked to modern cremation methods.

Saya prefer cremation...memudahkan anak cucu sekiranya mereka berhijrah di mana-mana. Tiada masalah untuk membersihkan kubur dan juga memindahkan tulang sekiranya tanah itu digunakan untuk tujuan pembangunan.

Well, I prefer cremation but I'm a non-Christian. That's not the case for me, anyway

Burying the body in our spiritual view isn't so much effective for average person especially with coffin. I think we have ground burial but only for certain people such as:

  • the elderly person who already lost interests in life
  • the yogis
  • infants

These people are buried nude without any shroud in lotus position. I guess in Tamil Nadu, some of them bury the dead but in the North, our region, it's not so much seen except among non-Hindus.

When we die, excretory gases are released from our decaying gros body. It's just the normal excretory gas just like the fart. Because the gases come from decaying body, so they emmit negative vibrations and frequencies. Tama component increase. Ghost, demons or negative energies lingering around the body environment due to the negative frequencies emitted by the decaying gros body (in the form of sound or rhythm). They'll attack our physical bodies by trying to take control on our five vital energies and their sub-energies....

These vital energies could be used by the demons to control our subtle bodies since the soul would be lingering around the atmosphere maybe for some days or for certain periods... Gros body still have subtle links with the subtle bodies for some period and average person is still full of worldly desires. The ghosts would use these links to get over the soul (spirit), transmitting dark energies. These will complicate the journey of the passing soul to the after life. So, there are prescriptions for funeral for the dead to minimize the attack of demons (dark energies) on the subtle body, shaing off the ties of the subtle body to its gros body and helping the soul to move on to other life i.e after life. These one is the research of Hindu spiritualists... we burn bodies to also protect the gros bodies from being tossed here and there by mantrikas..

I don't think Christian traditionally cremate the dead except that sorceres in medieval Western Europe were burn alive. No offense though, that is just what I read from medieval european history. I have never heard the tradition of cremating the death among Christians but I noticed that some Christians today cremate the dead. Maybe they inherit this tradition from the Greeks?

The first cremation in America took place in 1876, accompanied by readings from Charles Darwin and the Hindu scriptures. For many years, relatively few persons (mostly liberals and freethinkers) chose cremation. But that has changed dramatically. Only 5 percent of Americans were cremated in 1962; by 2000 it was 25.5 percent. In Japan, where burial is sometimes illegal, the cremation rate is 98 percent. The rise in cremations reflects many factors: concern for land use; the expense of traditional funerals; the loss of community and a sense of "place" in modern transient society; and New Age-type spiritualities.

While the weight of Christian tradition clearly favors burial, the Bible nowhere explicitly condemns cremation. Since 1963 the Roman Catholic Church has permitted cremation while "earnestly recommending" burial as the preferred mode of disposal. Billy Graham has noted (what Christians have always believed) that cremation cannot prevent a sovereign God from calling forth the dead at the end of time.

This is about Christianity and Cremation process, not Hindus and their prefered disposal.

FYI - Many Hindus believes that cremation is a cleaner process than burying someone cos the Soul could still inhabit the body after death and in some cases, tortured souls will be trapped within earthly realms and unable to reach afterlife where he or she will be judged, purified and allowed to be reborn again.
